Why Upgrade Your 3D Printer’s Lighting?

When you’re checking a first layer or watching a long print, being able to see inside your printer matters. An enclosed printer can leave parts of the build plate in shadow, especially when the room itself is dim.

A lighting upgrade makes the printing process easier to observe. For Bambu Lab P1S and X1C owners, the Skylake Labs lighting system brings adjustable illumination into the enclosure, helping you get a clearer view of what’s happening inside.

Get a clearer look at your first layer

The first layer is one of the most useful stages to watch. You’re looking for consistent lines, good adhesion, and areas where the filament may be lifting or leaving gaps.

Better lighting can make those details easier to inspect, particularly with dark filament or in shadowed areas of the build plate. You can spend less time changing your viewing angle or reaching for a flashlight.

Lighting won’t correct bed leveling or adhesion problems, but it can make them easier to notice.

Make print checks more convenient

During a print, you might want to check whether an edge is curling, a support has come loose, or the printer is depositing material where it should.

A well-lit enclosure helps you inspect these areas through the door without opening it just to get a better view. That can be especially useful when the printer sits in a workshop corner, cabinet, or room with limited overhead lighting.

It also makes routine tasks—such as checking the build plate or looking for loose filament—more comfortable.

Help your camera see inside the enclosure

If you use your printer’s camera to monitor progress, lighting is part of the image quality equation. More even illumination can help reveal areas that otherwise appear dark.

Results depend on the camera, viewing angle, exposure, and reflections from the enclosure. Maximum brightness isn’t always the best setting: glare can hide details too.

Start with white light and adjust the brightness while checking the camera feed. Aim for a clear view of the print surface without bright reflections.

Choose useful lighting, with room for customization

For inspecting prints, white light is a practical starting point. Colored effects can add personality to your setup, but they can also make filament colors and surface details harder to judge.

The Skylake Labs system uses WLED, with control through a compatible app or web browser. It includes a preloaded Bright White preset, giving you a straightforward option for everyday visibility alongside WLED’s customization features.

Pick the assembly option that suits you

The Skylake Labs lighting system uses a printable riser to position the LEDs around the top of the enclosure. DIY and solder-free kit options accommodate different assembly preferences.

Before ordering, review the current kit listing, compatibility information, required printed parts, and installation guide. Follow the installation instructions carefully, including unplugging the printer before beginning work.

Is a lighting upgrade worth it?

If you regularly reach for a flashlight, struggle to inspect dark filament, or find parts of your enclosure difficult to see, improved lighting can be a useful everyday upgrade.

Its value is visibility: a clearer view helps you understand what your printer is doing and makes checking your work more convenient.
